What could be rattle beneath my hood?

Hi,
I really hope you can help me! My sports car has be rattling for over a week presently and I'm starting to get worried around the cause of the problem.

The saloon is a 2000 Mustang V6 and the rattling boom is coming from VERY FAR BACK in the engine compartment, so please lift that into consideration when you answer.

The noise is loudest at slow speeds (under 25 mph) and while going over bumps, but I hear it adjectives the time. The car seem to have lost power, and is faltering to start after sitting for a while.

I took a look under the hood to try and diagnose the problem myself, but the crash of the engine seems to drown it out for the most cog. It is obnoxiously loud when I'm driving the car though. (It sounds approaching it's rattling right within front of you!)

Answers from mechanics or people who hold had this problem since would be greatly appreciated, but any help is greeting.

Please DO NOT tell me to cart it to a mechanic. Remember it's VERY FAR BACK (and kinda low too) in the engine.
