I have a 1989 Jetta GL and the speedometer works, but the odometer doesn't work that commonly. Recently it has begin making a whining sound when the sports car is put in drive it seem to increase as the rpms increase. In neutral and reverse here is no sound, simply in drive.

R U sure you mean odometer? The little compute that tracks mileage? Or do you mean the Tachometer which measures engine RPM?
I can't create in your mind an odometer making an audible noise.
