My car have been leak this oil... and it is discouraging if it runs out of it? My steering wheel make a screeching din when i turn the car on, as it moves into position. P.S. i enjoy a 2001 bmw 740IL .... thanks
You're humour. You drive a beamer and you don't know what power steering fluid is? Gee.. it's the fluid that makes your power steering work... IF you run out, you will lose your power steering.. (It's not rocket science...) What an invective to put on such a lovely vehicle...
the power steering make the driver can move softly the steering helm left or right
if your motor is leaking that grease and is making a funny noise, those are signs you requirement new power steering pump or contemporary rack and pinion those are the most common things to obtain broken and leak grease
also have to rob a look to the hoses too
at this point something is bad on your sports car so if you let it near out of oil you will make worse even more what is bad right very soon
it must hurts you when the shop tell you how much will cost you repair your bemmer O_o
Answers: Power steering fluid, which surrounded by most cars is the same item as automatic transmission fluid. It IS made from petroleum products, but it is NOT matching as motor oil. It act as hydraulic fluid in your steering system. You press on the fluid one place, pushes final someplace else...in this shield somewhere that it will assist your steering.
Yes it is bad if it runs out.
If you HAVE run out, the steering should surface heavier, because you have no power assist. In a 7 series, I dream of it would feel VERY stout.
Many power steering racks are NOT designed to be used without power assist long-term. You could be wearing out your steering by not have the power steering working properly. Also you could be damaging the pump as it tries to pump nought, or churns up bubbles in the fluid.
Thing is...you should pretty much never enjoy to change it...indubitably not that soon. The stuff is designed to go for tens of thousands of miles contained by a damn TRANSMISSION. Power steering is a much lower-stress application.
You need to find out WHY it's running out. Get that fixed. In the suggest time, keep padding up.
I would recommend Valvoline ATF with trademark conditioner (I recall it be specifically labelled as such, as challenging even other Valvoline ATFs), as that fixed my power steering leak on my prehistoric Corolla....except that I seem to bring to mind reading something about BMW requiring its own faddy brand of power steering fluid for some years and models. CHECK YOUR OWNER'S MANUAL FIRST. If not the owner's manual, the power steering fluid reservoir panama should also list what fluid you entail to use.
