last winter the 4x4 worked great and i had no problems at adjectives! this year when i take it out of 4x4 and put it back into 2wheel drive it idle real high. when its within park it idles at 2000 rpms and when i put it into reverse it clunks real loud. and contained by drive it idles at 2000 rpms as well. i enjoy put alot of money into my jeep already and i am really worried about this. is it something that needs fixed right presently or can it wait. what is going on with it? its a 99 jeep imperial cherokee laredo.
Answers: It has a vacum switch to engage 4wd. Sounds similar to the switch is sticking in 4wd. When that happens it let the engine pull unregulated air into the engine creating a vacum filter. Or one of the lines has a hole in it creating equal problem. A reputable 4x4 shop or your local Jeep dealer should be able to solve this in principle easily.
