What may motivation my dodge 318 w/ throttle body to be highly gutless when the motor seem to be upright?

i have a '78 plymouth trailduster 4x4, bought it for $400. it blows no smoke, no grease in the coolant or vice-versa, the timing seem to be right on, temp stays pretty constant. one problem is that when u put it in gear it idle so low it shuts off. and when i put it final into park or neutral sometimes the rpms dont give the impression of being to go adjectives the way spinal column up. when i give it gas it usually fixes the problem (until i put it surrounded by and out of gear again). also, it grinds when i put it into 4x4 (in neutral of course) . from 0-20 mph it sometimes is terrifyingly slow, mainly because of the idle problem but nonetheless when it is at it's best it definitely doesn't own the power it should for a v-8. the tranny is a three speed automatic. does anyone know how to configure speedometers? or is it better to have a shop do it? also when i put it into gear it shifts complex enough to jar a lot, is this run of the mill? any other input on this vehicle would be much appreciated.

the reality that it is a dodge! how many miles is on the motor, a moment ago because it doesn't smoke doesn't mean it isn't worn out!, check your verbs case fluid for the grinding, this should be separate from your tranny, check you tranny fluid not lately the level, the condition, it may obligation to be changed that should help the popping into gear, as far as the languish, you need to adjust the decline settings on the throttle body. speedo's in these year models be changed by putting new worm gears on the cable, it should be contained by the tail cone of the tranny, good luck!
