need a touch more info for good nurture back...which engines? auto or brochure trans?
jeep cherokee 4.0 engine is good - tranny have a tendancy to go out at some point...
taurus near the 3.0 are usually pretty reliable minimal problems
have see a lot of eclipse with electrical problems....
cougars next to the 2.5 are pretty good - usually stipulation intake gaskets replaced - $200 or so
impala's are nice cars.....pretty good drive train
haven't worked on satisfactory of the rest to know long term how powerfully they hold up... hope this helps and apposite luck

mazda is confident to maintain and cheaper to run also...
but if i can hold a toyota, that would be the cheapest regarding spares and cost of running and service availability...
as of presently, i would prefer 00Mazda Protege 95k $3995 as it has be driven the least and the model and year too is honourable.

1. go to nrma website and do the following checks:
1.1 REV CHECK
1.2 Financial liability checks etc.
1.3 Cost and any focal design problems in the motor, by checking it at the red book site www.redbook.com.au

Answers: I know cars very ably and I can say the ultimate two selective choices are your only choices because of costs and maintence...never buy a used 4x4!
Me personally I would move about with the eclipse if its contained by good condition. Honestly 4995 is a bit outta bargain range try bargain with the 4000 and lower.
