Answers:    It really depends on your vehicle. You didn't list Year, Make, Model, and engine.

Most cars contained by the US can run any octane level. In certainty most cars in the US own a compression ratio that prevents them from taking advantage of the premium and super unleaded gasolines. If your saloon does have a big compression engine, many vehicle manufacturers enjoy installed a Knock Sensor in the vehicle to prevent pre-ignition by retarding spark. This basically forces the engine to fire the spark at a point that is to say less than optimal for most power, but prevents engine wreck. Your car's user manual will vote something like Premium Fuel "Recommended", which imply that a knock sensor will allow you to use the cheaper gasoline without hurtful the engine.

If your user manual say Premium Fuel "Required", you must use the premium gasoline at all time. Using the cheaper gasoline will cause engine knocking, and destroy the engine. The knocking is pre-ignition occuring within the cylinder chamber at points other than the spark plug. When the multiple flame fronts collide, you'll acquire shock waves generate and this will cause the knock noise you hear from the engine. If you hear the knock noise coming from your engine, lug the car to you local parts store and purchase a bottle of "octane" booster. Basically, you pour this stuff into your gas cistern. This will help minimize the knock and minimize any damage to your engine.
