It seems like nearby are such few DC SPDT switches out there, and a ton of AC SPDT switches. Most of the ac switches are rated 125ac, can I use this for a 12v dc switch surrounded by my automobile? The amp rating is quite low, probably ~2 amps (it's for lights inside the car.)
I know you should not use ac switches for dc applications because of arc'ing, but I also hear that I could achieve away with it since it's only 12v. Some sites even state that it is ok for 12v dc use. Is this true or will I run into issues?
Thanks.
From a voltage point of scenery, 12V is fine. The current rating might be a problem, so I would determine the current loading first before deciding whether to use this type of switch. If the current is greater, you can wire the switch to use a relay.
Answers: a switch is basically a switch, it doesn't matter if it is an ac or dc voltage (but dc does cause more arcing). 125vac is merely the voltage rating of the switch. As said above, you need to worry in the order of the current that will be passed through the switch. Look on the switch it should also give you a current rating... Most small switches that you find at checker/napa/ect are rated for 1amp.
