ANYONE who says "under powering a sub will verbs it" is holding on to a myth.
If I turn my volume down, I'm actually "under powering" my subs. Low volume, low power.
People are confusing "clipping" beside "underpowering". THEY ARE NOT THE SAME THING!! Clipping and over powering is what hurt subs and are both the exact same thing.
Clipping is when someone tries to over compensate a low powered amp by increasing the sensitivity level (adjust the gain to a lower voltage input) to go and get more power out of it.
The gain control is a device used to "match" the volts RMS coming from the source.

You'll need a multi-meter (AC voltmeter), Microsoft Excel and a instrument to burn an audio CD from an MP3.

I see no evidence why it would spoil it though In a technical sense you are right, but within a PRACTICAL sense, the advice about not underpowering a bass driver is adjectives to explain to non-technical people why you should not buy an inadequate amplifier.
In the concrete world, an amplifier underpowered for the application will be driven to clipping the first time the user tries to obtain the desired bass performance from that combination of amp and driver. So while you are correct that underpowering and clipping are technically not alike thing, in practical application they are so closely associated that the distinction is of interest solitary to technological nit-pickers like you and me.
