Stop suggesting to set the gain by ear to people. This is why:
There be a experiment where 15 pro audio shops be given the task to set a specific setup by ear. Only 2 have it set within tolerances of actual length. The other 13 had the system clipping while 3 have the system severely clipping.
The purpose of the gain is to match the signal volts RMS coming from the source (CD player, etc.) to the input of the amp.

You'll need a multi-meter (AC voltmeter), Microsoft Excel and a method to burn an audio CD from an MP3.
