So for a door speaker or something, if you hear nouns, you got it right. For subs, you can usually remove the screws and look to net sure they are wired correctly. Or a simple test for subs is to use a battery (not sure what voltage it will whip 12volts will probably do) to apply DC to the speaker wires... If one sub pushes out and the other sucks in, you need to reverse one of them.
Car stereo speakers are designed to work on DC voltage not AC. ( 4 ohms or less) It does product a difference if the polarity is wrong. The speakers will sound distorted...Distortion is the number one reason why speakers "Blow", not because of too much power...
adjust the match and fade to each speaker and check to see if the correct speaker is working. if not, some wires may be hooked up wrong within the back of the stereo.

What do you deliberate is the best...
Basically, it either functions or it doesn't. Some family say there is polarity, (i.e. the positive and glum wires matter) but they are wrong. Speakers are AC signals, so plus and minus are interchangeable (the exception being subwoofers sharing an enclosure - since they create pressure contained by the box, they need to be in phase to work together). So for a door speaker or something, if you hear nouns, you got it right.
