Answers: the area is the inside space, so be sure to incorporate the wood thickness for overall dimensions. but essentially tak depth times length times hieght, all contained by ft. measurements. so to get the inches to a decibal foot devide by 12. so 1'-3" = 1.25'
and example of a box size would be 1.25'x1.25'x 1.25' = 1.953 cu/ft. so if you use 3/4" MDF your outside dimensions would be 1'-3 3/4" on all sides.
