Does the thickness of the wood affect the sound

Will a Pioneer AVIC-Z2 fit surrounded by...

Help beside sports car radio stuff.?

Yes, especially on a sealed birdcage. The pressure inside the enclosure controls the woofer. If you go beside 1/2" the walls will deflect and change the "Q" of the enclosure. Usually 5/8" is apt but you may have to go 3/4" if the wattage is giant. Hope this helps.

Any plans for a subwoofer box trailing...

Answers:    yes as capably as density off the wood too.. the denser, thicker the wood, the better the resonance in the box.
The best stuff to form sealed boxes out of are MDF board, plexiglass, and fiberglass, due to high denisty and the tensile strengh of the materials. (you want a strong bits and pieces that can withstand the repeated compression of the air chamber)
