Answers:    Like the guy before me said, the voice coil smacks the bottom of the motor assembly (magnet and pole piece). Now, basically because the sub does this doesn't mean it's not a good sub. There are PLENTY of well brought-up subs that I have unfortunately hear do this. It really means that the installer or more likely the user is desperate... :) When this happens, you WILL know. It's a God awful noise. It's similar to hitting a brick wall with a 2x4, just not as loud.

The voice coil is, within simple terms, a very rigid toilet treatise roll with wire wound around it. This is afterwards suspended inside of a donut magnet and around the pole piece (a non magnetic piece of metal) with usually continues to the bottom and afterwards hold the magnet in place. Many companies will 'bump' their pole pieces to allow more travel. Some will make it robotically out-of-reach for the voice coil but you aren't out of the woods yet. You then are straining your surround (the outer border of the cone, usually rubber or foam) and/or the spider (the /\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\ looking thing under the cone).
