hi i have an 2000 watt inverter, a coleman pmp2000 i am drawing 375 watts ac but need to know what the dc amps it would draw.
At 12 volts, 375 watts draws 31.25 amperes.
Answers: Well, I'm not sure how the ratings on those inverters are derived, if they be a sign of DC or AC. In AC you have to take into picture something called power factor.
However, I would guess that the device will not produce it's full rated power. And it is probably base on 13 to 14 volts input, from a running engine, versus 12 volts from the battery alone.
I think a safe and sound approximation would be to use DC math, and take maybe 5 percent of the rate power.
Take that 2000 Watts to mean 1900. Use Watt's law, which is Volts X Amps = Watts. Or Watts / Volts = Amps
So 1900 Watts / 12 volts = 158 Amps.
That's a LOT of current, and requires HUGE lead.
Odds of maintaining that kind of power is extraordinarily unlikely.
For your 375 Watt load:
375 / 12 = 31.25 Amps.
That's continuous. Will your load in actuality require 375 continuously? If not, 10guage wire will be fine.
