It sounds like the infirm Looney Tunes bomb drop sound or when Wile E. Coyote falls rotten the cliff...any ideas? Also it with the sole purpose does it on the AM stations and not the FM or when I listen to CDs or MP3s.

No matter, the problem is any a ground loop or the noise filter surrounded by the HU has gone discouraging.
You can try an inductive type filter that connects between the HU and the battery.
There is probably some loose wires flaccid around the speaker area or some other electrical appliance!
