As good an excuse as any to junk it. Lucky you.

Mazda RX-7 and RX-8 servicing?

Have you tested for spark yet? I would start near, then with the coil, as it is the cheapest to replace. If coil is well-mannered I would suspect the ignition control module/pickup in the distributor. This is all assuming you enjoy no spark.

Answers:    Why people give stupid answers similar to "junk it" is beyond me.
ANYWAY...Have you tried retreiving the codes by the "key dance"?
Turn switch ON (not to start, only until idiot lights come on), OFF, ON, OFF, ON and count the pulses. They always come to an end with "55" which is five flashes, pause, five flashes, whcih method "end of codes". I will give you a intermingle to decode the flashes.
Offhand, to me, I would suspect the Hall Effect pickup in the distributor. It is merely one part of the distributor, not the whole entity. Very easy to replace.
Only other thing that come to mind is the ASD (AutoShutDown) relay, which is contained by the engine compartment, on one of the fender walls. It shuts down the spark and fuel supply.
Just a note: The Hall Effect pickup may or may not generate a code. I had one quit intermitently afterwards permanently on me, and it didn't generate a code consistently.
