Intermittent ,but getting worse.
sort sure the steering wheel is straight,(and the front tires) not tight to one side. this will lock the steering wheel.
My runner does like thing just turn the steering pedals a tad as you turn the key works every time for my 91 & my 84 truck GIVE IT A TRY
Hi,
get it fixed - may be the cylinder, if it locks up on you at an inconvenient place it'll suck and locksmiths are expensive, unless you have AAA.
have the car ever been stolen? I don`t know they used a screwdriver or something and damaged the mechanism.
Get it fixed if the other fixes, close to jiggling the wheel, etc,.. don't work
Good Luck

Answers: Since the problem is "getting worse," it is probably the tumbler assembly (key cylinder) that is wearing out, which is a fairly adjectives thing.
The cylinder is linked to the steering column lock. When the push button is removed, the lock (like a house dead bolt) engages the column. If the steering have a lot of pressure on it, either direction, that bolt can be pinned so that the switch is very hard to turn. Cranking on the controls will alleviate that and you can turn the key freely.
But if the problem is in the switch, which is what it sounds like, no amount of turning the wheel will adjustment that. The tumbler will have to be replaced. The part is just about $60, and the labor usually runs $50 to $100 depending on where you live. (Notice I didn't say it be WORTH that much labor, just how much it usually costs!)
Hope this helps. God bless!

try grab hold of the steering wheel and cranking hard one road while trying to turn the key, then try the other path. I had this happen until that time and as it turned out, my ex parked the car and when she did, she had the reins cranked hard over to one side, when she shut off the motor she let go of the steering when and it jammed the ign cylinder unyielding!..try it!
