I have had a few elder broncos, one thing is that they are safe surrounded by the aspect that if he does crash he wont be hurt, they are tanks.
They do have a reputation for need repairs but what doesn't. Ford motors last a long time you should use your best judgment and weigh it next to the asking price. I would by one up to 200,000 miles because If it was treated right it should still outlive his needs as long as he take care of it.
The Bronco was a virtuous truck. I was sad to see Ford axe it. The Bronco is a great truck to build into a mudder. They weren't great mudders stock, but no truck short of a Power Wagon is. The Bronco have a nearly bullet proof drivetrain. Don't expect it to not have it's fair share of little problems though, approaching a distibuter cap here and vacuum leak within. All in all they are a great truck.
Well down here in hickville everyone and their brother have a BRONCO. We all go muddin' on Saturday mornin'. My personal BRONCO have about 165,000 miles on it, and ol' faithful is still a'going.

Answers: Ford Broncos are not the greatest. They are better then the Bronco II, but that isn't truism much. If your son is really wanting a truck, get him a Toyota.
