I've heard that they are prone to expensive problems... and very few reputable shops to repair them when they do break down. Is this everyone's experience? Or freshly the opinion of a disgruntled few?
Just don't buy the automatic transmission. It's no righteous. And it's painfully expensive to fix.

Answers: ok i have a 2001 passat glx, its a great motor in my opinion but mine is fully loaded and a five speed, it be aslo the year they re-designed them. if its a v6 then go for it, but if its a vr6 or a 1.8t (turbo) dont buy it too expensive to fix and alot of problems.
yes it does cost a pretty penny to fix a passat mine be 40,000 brand new, they are imported to the US from germany.
surrounded by my opion if you want mileage, power, and luxury go for it.

It has a reliable engine and is a good motor. The only reliability problems are minor, but annoying. The light bulbs don't later long and the power windows can get stuck sometimes. It is adjectives electrical problems. These problems are cheap, but fixing mechanical problems are expensive. Don't worry just about that because the mechanical parts are reliable.
