Answers: I can power up wheelies on my '05 GSX-R600 in 1st gear with no problem at adjectives. However, since you are asking this question, I am assuming you don't have abundantly of riding experience on a sportbike and therefore shouldn't be doing wheelies anyways.
To put it simply: Powering up is the easiest way, but isn't really the best. Clutching up is the most predictable route to wheelie, once you get used to slipping the clutch at the right RPM. I'd start in 2nd gear, because in attendance is way too much power in 1st, and you're possible to loop it. COVER THE REAR BRAKE! If the bike starts to come up too fast, apply smooth pressure to the brake to keep from flipping over backwards.
And don't blame me when you wreck your pretty untried bike.
