Have a 1979 Dodge Lil Red Express. Orginal everything: 360V8 (5.9L)
I have just just now ran into a problem. Truck has be running excellent lately until yesterday. Problem is truck is not wanting to start. It turns over but wont start. Checked the distributor cap, seems angelic, just a lil green on the inside of the cap, nought major. Truck will run after a while, but then shuts sour. Ballast is fine, checked that. My only thought is the rear aspect of the carb is sticking.. or the MSD Ignition. Checked the plugs, adjectives looks good. Truck sounds normal as I try to start it, only wont kick over to run.. I am loosing my mind, good mopar warning is needed here... Truck did backfire pretty badly lastnight.. when it first started acting up.
cam or timing sensor in the bottom of the distrib. may be giving you fits.
Check emissions, fuel confinement or voltage regulator on firewall. The ballast resistor will cause the engine to crank and not start at all, they thoroughly rarely go unpromising. I love your truck, they didnt make alot of those.
I agree with Dodge Man, MSD's be not stock on LRE's and a backfire sounds more like timing than fuel related. I've always used Accel systems and have virtually no problems. I'd start looking at the timing first thing. Great truck, wish I would own bought one in '78 and I even had the money!!
I would go for the boater and rotor
good luck
cam or timing sensor in the bottom of the distrib. may be giving you fits. My experience is that if the engine has gas, runs fine and later suddenly dies (like you turned off the key, not coughed and next died) - your culprit is the ignition. Fuel delivery problems tend to stay - not come and go. Backfiring could be any due to fuel or timing issues. To isolate the problem, disconnect the distributor wire from the coil (so the engine will not start) pull one of the spark plug wires past its sell-by date the spark plug and hold it near a ground (hold it with an insulator of some sort - not your hand), later have someone try to start the engine. This will tell you if you are in actuality getting spark. If you are, the problem lies elsewhere.
The original ignition was a second social group computer which largely failed the test of time. If you hold no spark, the MSD is the most likely culprit. An economical alternative is the Mopar Performance ignition conversion kit. It costs in the order of $100.00, looks stock and works like a charm.
Although this engine came next to a heavy-duty double roller timing chain, almost 30 years of use could mean that the timing manacle has stretched or partially broken - varying the timing. This could cause backfiring, especially through the exhaust.
The inventive carburetor, a Carter Thermoquad, was known for individual tempermental. The addition of the comparatively rudimentary emission controls of the light of day made the TQ very unreliable. Backfiring through the carburetor is usually due to a lean-burn condition. The air tap on the carb's secondaries (the part you see at the top) was designed to progressively meter the heavens flow through the secondary throttle plates during wide-open throttle. During starting or running (other than floored) if the throttle plates are properly closed, the position of the air stopcock will not matter, but will have to be in tune to properly work during wide open throttle.
Hope this help. Good luck. You have a cool vehicle!

Answers: id start looking within the ignition system since its not all original you may own a bad ignition unit and that will wreak it not to fire i have had plentifully of problem from msd ignition systems in the past,i do better near accel on most of my rides, but that's what id check first,if you got fire and gas and its within time it should run, good luck on finding it,

92 Acura Integra and I cant pilfer...
You can also try posting this cross-examine on www.moparts.com A lot of Mopar people there near far more technical knowledge than me can facilitate you. I would start checking the basics as some said. air, fuel, spark. Looking at the spark as suggested above will give support to a lot. A weak spark is noticable. Check plugs, boater rotor, check to make sure the plastic carb body does not have a crack surrounded by it. (easy to over tighten) then check vaccum lines. I found my LRE had untested wiring issues. I once had the truck fall short to do anything at the turn of the key. No power in the minicab or anything. I looked everywhere. All the wires looked great, but finally discovered one of the wired was all corroded from the inside out. When I cut final the insulation, the copper wired fell out like powder. So maybe its an intermittent cable problem. Try the basics first. Sure do miss my 1978 LRE. Could anyone give an account me where...
