im working on a 1977 firebird formula 400 4bbl ...when i try to cramk it even with the strongest battery out in attendance it turns super slow whats the problem guys or gals?
replace the side connectors that may have kill your old starter. Also make sure your motor can tun freely.
Sounds like you hold a souped up motor, possibly really high compression, & a big cam. You may need a stronger starter
Otherwise (problems) could be some good posture problems, or some other internal mechanical problem unseen, scored pistons or several other posibilities (does it bring in an unusual sound when cranking)
Answers: bad cable, bad conection on the starter, starter not shimmed right.perchance the starter is junk..

If you havent messed near your dist. and your starter is ok and shimed if needed then I would say check your ground rope, most of them have rusted off or are to scraggy to support the current. I had a new "Help" ground cable when I be ready after building my GTO from the ground up and it turned slow and just didnt hold any guts, after the 3rd time my bud burned himself on that weaved steel ground cable, it was cherry red.
Try this, attain a set of jumper cables and attach one of them tot he engine and the other to the frame after try starting the car, rem that the engine and trans are not connected to the frame by steel, all points hold rubber. make sure you attach the cable to bare steel.
I use two 1,000cca batt contained by the trunk next to my fuel cell, I run both NEG cables to the frame, at the engine I run a cable from the frame to the engine. The engine i'm putting surrounded by next is going to have solid mounts so i'm not going to obligation the engine to frame cable.
Also look into welding wire for cable, its cheaper and own more strans of copper wire in it VS reg batt cable. You want more strands within the cable, the more the better it works.
If you have any questions Email me I can relief you wout with size.

Pull the plugs and disconnect the distributor so a spark will not ignite the vapors that will come out of the spark plug holes to see how it cranks minus compression. If it cranks normally then you can try to retard the timing by turning the distributer counterclockwise for a time with the plugs returned to their holes and the distributor reconnected.
Just giving you something to try to help you amount it out cause if it still cranks slow then it is surrounded by the wiring or the starter itself. I have see Pontiac starters that took 4 fat shims to be shimmed right and my Firebird has 4 plus a skinny one.

sounds like the timing is bad ,turn the distributor either left or to the right when turning over the engine, and see if the motor turns over faster..if the timing is too far advanced or retarded, the engine will turn over slow...If you havent messed near your dist. and your starter is ok and shimed if needed then I would say check your ground rope, most of them have rusted off or are to scraggy to support the current.
