i know the reputation of 305's, and i've decided, surprisingly, to stick beside it and see where i can achieve it in jargon of horse / torque ratings and (hopefully) make a pretty spur-of-the-moment ride. any suggestions? any sites?

Then I'd stick next to reputable sources for parts. eBay is great, but you never really know what you're getting.
An EFI 305 can be made to run hard, but anything beyond low 12s/ elevated 11s will require a blower or nitrous.
you,ll be better off going to a show shop and buying a cam,i don't recommend buying one off e-bay,its too much trouble to transport things back when they don't work right or hold a defect within them,if you deal next to a local parts store they can also help you next to a better cam for that car,you can boost the 305 a great deal,i have made a few of those run really righteous,i just wouldn't promise with e-bay for parts for it,obedient luck.
