whats the easiest way to tighten the loose hydraulic tappets on a 98 wrangler??
Replace them. Not worth the trouble
They are not adjustable. They are Hydraulic lifters which are self adjusting. You hold to replace it or live with the noise. This resonance is common on any high milage engine or one that did not see adjectives of its oil changes along the agency. If either of these are true then it is not worth fixing due to the expected life span of the engine.
most hydralic lifters are not adjustable, only replaceable.
There is no adjust the hydraulic lifters,if they are making a tapping sound next there not holding oil within them, some times when you rev the motor up they will quite down a little. You can adjust the spigot lifters if the sound doesn't quite down when you rev up the motor I would check the tap adjustment

Answers: If they are adjustable, tighten till tapping stops, and an further 1/2 turn, to preload the lifter. If they are not adjustable, either grease pressure is not getting to the lifters, or they are gummed up internally. A half quart of trans fluid in the engine grease may help to clean them, as it is markedly high detergent. About 500 miles, then adapt the oil, wether it has help or not.
