As a long term buy after I would go for a VW Passat. They are slightly more expensive to run but worth it within the end.
The model that's simply been replaced which around the MK3.

If your funds don't stretch that far then a Astra Diesel is not a impossible second choice.

Hi in that. I once had an Astra diesel, and I will report to you what I found. It was a small sports car with a big heart, and one hell of an engine. The sports car pulled like a bull...!!
I took it once to 117 mph... Not desperate for a 1.4 ltr diesel, eh. She (I called her Betsy) held the road close to a magnet. You won't go far wrong if you buy an Astra diesel 1.4.

The Astra will cost far less to run & repair. I wouldn't buy a VW beside 100k+ miles at all, they're nowhere in the neighbourhood as tough & reliable as some folk seem to estimate, especially at that mileage, & they cost a bomb to fix. Also, the reason you've see lots of Passats with big miles for public sale is probably because they've been taxi, & you really don't want an ex-taxi!!
