when i press on the gas from a dead stop within is a delay surrounded by acceleration but if drop it into first (automatic) it goes basically fine

Answers: the governor pressure solenoid or transducer on the valve body are fruitless, causing governor pressure to stay on when you come to a stop, when it wants to drop to 0. it does not have a powered governor, gone from dakotas since the 1997 model year at least. when you drop it contained by manual 1st you are turning on the low reverse group manually overriding the governor and you get 1st gear. give somebody a lift it to a dealer or well-mannered trans shop, or if you are pretty mechanically inclined you can try replacing the solenoid and transducer yourself, but you own to partially disasemble the spigot body. its not a major situation.
A stuck governor valve, keeping the trans within second. Add a can of " trans medic" by gunk to the transmission and drive it for a few days. After that time, when the trans starts acting properly, enjoy the transmission grease and filter changed.
