The guy interested in buying it has asked me how much I'm predisposed to accept to hold it (he needs to find a hitch installed on his vehicle and come to my state to pick it up). $500 sounds restrained to me. Make him be specific about when he intends to pick the trailer up. Tell him that you are going to take this trailer stale of the market and consider it sold, this means that if he default you will have to re-advertise the trailer and lose time until the sale, for this reason the deposit will be non-refundable.

Answers:    Myself, I would ask for $500 and give the guy 30 days, if i.e. acceptable to the buyer, but 45 days at the most.

The deposit would be non-refundable. Set a date and time of day that he have to complete the sale. If not done by the date and time of the contract, then he forfeits the deposit.
