If you are buying privately, check to see if the car is registered.....close to the paperwork in the glovebox match the license plate. If not, be cautious. No issue what the seller say, he may be selling it for a dealer because its bogus or have a problem or discrepancy. I myself sell well-mannered quality vehicle. I specialize in 4wd Japanese cars and trucks. I unanimously buy them up north cheap on ebay for 2 reasons. Up north, a vehicle with 100-125,000 miles is considered mature, and most ppl just use 4wd for snow. Here within Arkansas, there is big constraint for older model Japanese 4x4's beside low miles. Hunters, 4 wheelers, etc. I buy em on ebay for $1500 or so, fly up there, drive put money on, use it for a few months and then detail it and go it for $3500 or so. I may have to fix somewhat rust spot once in a while but so far i own been lucky and made a few bucks. One other entry to consider is this....even if you did have a regular mechanic u trusted, likelihood are slim he would recommend you buying "ANY" car. The cause for this is, if he said it was "a apt one" and you bought it and it ended up have lots of problems.....you would blame him and he would lose your business. Most mechanics are this way, so its tough to appropriate a car somewhere and ask them to "merely look it over". My best advice is buy "as exotic as possible" with low miles.
