I don't have a sneaking suspicion that you're going to get much more than 20 mpg combined city/highway as a "safe" number. Estimating difficult than that could leave you on the side of the road, waiting for someone to bring you gasoline.
Spend the $50 and grasp the gas gauge repaired, it's ably worth the money.
Start with a full container of gas. If you use a GPS that calculates how far you've driven, after when you fill up the gas reservoir, divide the number of miles by the number of gallons filled.
Or, if no GPS, freshly roughly guesstimate how far you've driven, based on where on earth you went.
