I think people try reading more into driving a stick than what is really within. I have driven a stick since I was a juvenile and I am a truck driver and now I shift with out even using the clutch. You can probably learn okay enough to drive in a few hours. It took me a couple of afternoons (maybe 2 hours at a time) of practice to seize comfortable enough to hit the road. But getting really good take regular practice. Don't be discouraged if you stall out a few times in traffic. Just try to keep your cool and carry going again.
