Why is the national speed limit sign simply a white circle with a black queue through it and other speed limits are numbers such as 30, 40 and 50? Why did they establish not to just put a 70 sign or contained by some cases a 60 sign?
Answers: It's a throw back to the days previously we had national speed confines. The white circle with the black diagonal stripe actually medium a speed de-limited road, i.e. you could do whatever speed you considered necessary on that road.
The indroduction of speed limits within 1965 effectively made these signs obsolete but a bit than replace them their meaning altered to tight maximum speed limit.
So that if the national speed closing date is changed the thousands of signs don't have to be replaced.
