Do not move the car until both of you hold fastened your seatbelts (I know that sounds obvious, but I hear stories about general public failing because the inspector didn't buckle up and they pulled away! I don't think oodles would do that to deliberately sabotoge you, but some relatives are jerks, so only remember to buckle up...)
For extra reassurance, wait for him/her to enunciate it's okay to start.
Stop at every stop sign for at least 2-3 second, and most importantly, stay calm!
