I know squat about axles. Everyone have to start someplace though, so I guess now is as honest a time as any. I broke the pinion on my 1979 F150's front axle. It's a Dana 44 and I was wondering if the ring and pinion are what make it a Dana 44 or if it's the whole axle assembly including axle shafts and even the housing that make it half ton? What I'm necessarily getting at is this...Can I put a Dana 60 ring and pinion into a Dana 44 axle to make my Dana 44 stronger? This is probably going to nouns like a really stupid put somebody through the mill to someone who knows what they are doing, but similar to I said...gotta start somewhere :o)
Dana 60 front axles are pretty expensive, like a majestic or more. Stuff in a different ring and pinion in your Dana 44, break it contained by properly and you should get another 25 years out of that r&p.
No. :-)
A Dana 44 uses an 8.75" diameter ring gear, the Dana 60 ring gear is 9.75" diameter. The housing isn't physically ample enough to adopt the larger ring gear.
Answers: The housing is different from a 44 to a 60. You can put the 60 in as an assembly lone, and will require a different drive shaft and some other parts. You may need the assist of a professional welder to make some of it work. You will also involve to match the reverse axle as well. It is slightly a big job to brand name a change over close to that. Best bet is to fix what you got beside the way it be originally. Check aftermarket sources or your local 4x4 shop for heavier ring and pinions, they are out there
