Does a 3 cylinder engine get something done any worse than a 4 cylinder engine?

I'm looking at buying a new car but my dad (a former mechanic) think that it is crap because it is only a 3 cylinder engine and it is 'unbalanced'.

Is there anyone here who have experience of both kinds of engine (ideally a previous owner) and can tell me if they drive or get the impression any different.

Thanks!

a three cylinder engine will be giving out less power, but may be more economical,we have come a long channel with engine design, and a three cylinder will work just as apt as a four cylinder, but with a lower out put, the Audi A2,has a three cylinder engine(the deisel version) give about 80mpg,but if you want economy and power, next have a look at the Citreon range,C2 and C3,they are with the sole purpose 70 bhp,but loads of pulling power and very economical, and they are right down in price, and the deisel models enjoy a road tax of lb35.00 per year, compared to the petrol model at lb120.00.
good luck
Depends on size and substance of car, type of engine, etc. I had a three cylinder 1977 Yamaha 7502D Triple and it be speedy. of course it was a motorcycle. Look at the '95 neon and '95 Civic. The four cylinders contained by each car be not the same, as the Neon was far faster consequently the Civic. So many things will effect the performance... but they speak gas will top $4 this summer, so get the better economy!

Answers:    Obviously the people that have already answered hold never ridden a Triumph speed triple. Low power? I think not! Pound for pound, a 3 cylinder engine with equal displacement as a 4 cylinder engine would be almost indistinguishable. I would expect that the 3 cylinder would not be able to make as much horsepower, but would out verbs the 4 cylinder in a torque contest. Vibration wise, the 4 banger might require smaller number tricks to tune out engine vibrations, but once tuned, neither engine would necessarily vibrate more in production form.

Now, if you are comparing completely specific makes and models of cars that have 3 cylinder and 4 cylinder engines, afterwards you also need to know how large the engines are and whether they are tuned for torque, horsepower, big MPG, etc. I expect that the previous responders were imagining specific examples of 3 cylinder cars. And since most production 3 cylinder cars tend to enjoy LESS displacement than production 4 cylinder cars, they typically have less power and seize better gas mileage.

3 cyl engine has a combustion stroke every 240 degrees the crank shaft turns compaired to 180 beside the 4 cly. It isn't as well balanced or enjoy the preformance of a 4cyl, but its not that big of a deal. If your looking for a perfect hanging engine i'd recremend a inline 6cyl.

Lisen to your DAD, He's right any 4 cyl. will run circles around a 3 cyl. The 3 cyl. has no power If you get to get out of some one way, you would be better rotten getting out of the car and run for it because you will pass up the 3 cyl. and be out of danger.
