Reliable vehicle suggestion?

I can't really spend anything over 6k since i'm a self supporting graduate student. I've looked at adjectives types of cars: cavaliers, ford focus, malibu, impala, etc. Any experience with a car that would dribble into this category and what's your suggestion for something really reliable.
