Stickshift hill on highway?

i was driving my stickshift volkswagon on the highway the other daytime and my boyfriend and i argued about how to walk up steep hills. i check out of it in 5th gear the unbroken time even when i have to gun it to keep hold of going but he said its hard on the motor and i should go to 4th faster.
whos right? my way is better on gas isnt it?!!

Toyota cars (quality)?

Answers:    As long you are not lugging (under powering) the engine, and you won't at that speed, within is and will not be any damage to it. Also you will bring back better gas millage in the high gear. So you are driving right. Now if you can't keep your speed up you may want to downshift.

Long residence damage.. I'll agree to you know when I damage my five speed truck if it ever stops running... by the route I only hold 180,000 miles on it and would trust it anywhere. But then by the thumbs down I don't know what I am conversation about and I simply have drove straight shift cars for more years than most of you reading this message are mature. (And by reading what the experts say nearly this subject, those experts must be very stupid, as everyone here know more then they do.)

What is a "coming home device" on...

what you're motto is you don't really understand the gears.
so when you start from a stop, why do you use 1st gear -- wouldn't 5th gear be better on gas, as you voice?
