In 1987 - Chrysler bought Lamborghini
surrounded by 1994 - Chrysler needed cash and sold Lambo
Between 94 and 98 - they be owned by a couple of different independent owners - and struggled
In 1998 - Audi/VW purchased them and has owned them ever since.
I don't know why the sorrowful face - Lamborghini probably have the best product line within their entire existence right now. They needed the finance that a large company provides - of late like Aston Martin have been rejuvenated since anyone acquired by Ford (although they are very soon independent).
