Typically, the initial cost of a diesel car is HIGHER than the initial cost of of a petrol (so I guess you're surrounded by UK??) but the relative difference should be the same.
Insurance carrier base their rates for PHYSICAL DAMAGE coverage on diverse items - one being the initial cost of the vehicle. So, it the cost for the diesel text is higher than that of the petrol magazine (same car, mind you) - the insurance is going to cost you a bit more. Only your agent/broker will be capable of tell you the exact difference.
If you can go and get by with insuring for liability ONLY, later it should not make a difference contained by the cost of insurance.
Good luck and I hope this helps!
