Car rental insurance?

when you rent a car how do you win car insurance coverage through your insurance provider for example through california state automobile association or AAA? do you want to have full coverage next to AAA to get insurance on saloon rentals? do you have to show the motor rental company proof that you have vehicle insurance? is it possible to rent a car in need insurance?do you have to bring proof of insurance next to you if insured with a company approaching AAA when travelling in the rental vehicle if you get pulled over or draw from in a coup�� accident? i hear that car insurance offered through a coup�� rental company is lousy, why is this?
