DMV california. Sold sports car but I be not taken bad of the registration and DMV not agreeable of what to do?.?

I sold my car last January and the registration for that saloon was just mail to me by the DMV. I had sent all the information within when I sold the car to the DMV. They say they hold no record of it and that the new owner never registered the coup¨¦. I do not have any information on the person I sold the sports car to and the DMV was very un-helpful of what I can do. They would not bear me off the registration and insisted that I had to procure the information from the guy I sold the car too which I don't have. What can I do?
Thanks

This is kind of in response to EJ, devout idea to take plates sour (if they stay with the owner). In some states, the plates stay with the vehicle and next there's nothing you can do besides threatening the new owner to register it.

And take the information of the person who is taking over legal ownership of your saloon when you sell it.

New Car Registration?

Answers:    This is too past due for you but maybe some other California drivers can avoid the situation you are in. I used to live within Calif and sold cars that the buyer failed to register. I had sent surrounded by the Release of Liability to the DMV but that didn't stop the local cops from coming after me about a year later when the motor was reported for wreckless driving near a conservatory. Fortunately for me I had the information about who bought the vehicle. I now live in Nevada and surrounded by this state they don't have a useless Release of Liability form. Instead what you do is remove the plates from the car when you market it and return them to the DMV or transfer them to another car you might enjoy. This forces the buyer to register the car or get stopped by the cops for not have a license on the car. I would suggest that when you sell a coup¨¦ in California, or any state for that matter, you remove the license plates and turn them into the local DMV bureau and get you name stale the title of the vehicle.
