I own been told you have to own the truck. unless it is over 26K GVWR than no, a CDL would not be required. so if it is the typical box truck style, than by tenet you are not required to have one, it may be company policy. I self taught myself, and get a class B CDL with hazmat. it is pretty easy to obtain, just read the book, take the assessment, go get your medical card, rent a truck and drive it to DMV and bear the road test.They need a class 1 CDL
