Driving licence required to hire a vehicle within tenerife?

I have read that a Green UK licence must be accompanied by an International Driving Permit.
Is this true? and if so where on earth do i get one?

they dont normally bother beside licences over there..they just want your money ,BUT,they will hold your pasport and blackmail you if theres any damage to the car...be there ,done that
