Answers: If you can find/afford one, any Volvo. Mid 1990s and later Subarus are similarly rugged.
Any Toyota/Lexus or Honda/Acura you similar to should be a good car for you. (Well, except possibly an Integra Type R, or an S2000).
Also:
Any Mazda save RX-anythings, 626, and MX-6. (many RXs are too fast for a brand new driver, and all three are less reliable than other Mazdas)
Suzuki Esteem and Aerio
General Motors A, B, G, F, W, and Epsilon platform cars.

Ford Focus, Fusion, Escort/Tracer, Crown Vic/Grand Marquis/Towncar, Thunderbird/Cougar (V8 solitary, early 90s to 1997...nothing later)
BMW 3 or 5 series, including Z3
Dodge Neon and Chrysler PT Cruiser, preferably booklet transmission, as new as you can get hold of.
Nissan anything other than 300ZX and 350Z
Beware of: Audis and Volkswagens, particularly past due 90s and early 2000s. Cavaliers and Sunfires (avoid those entirely). V6 Mustangs prior to 2005. (Actually all Ford V6s prior to 2005, retrieve some truck engines) 1999 and later Mitsubishi Eclipse. (Heavy, mediocre performance surrounded by every regard. Doesn't live up to its appearance, which IMO is ugly. Doesn't live up to the birthright of the first two generations of Eclipse.)
All these are stereotypical chick cars. Cars that look good, but can't backbone up those looks. (Either with reliability, performance, or both)
Almost any modern vehicle should be fine for a short driver. You aren't likely to have any trouble until you capture into larger trucks, vans, and SUVs.
