If it happened ay dark and the horse ran into the side of your vehicle or jumped out surrounded by front of you, I could see where the accident would hold been unavoidable on your wrapping up. I also doubt the horse was just standing surrounded by the middle of the road and you hit it. So I'm betting there was some function you could not avoid.

Seriously now, whats the difference if you hit a horse, a dog, or a deer? You are responsible for the damages. A horse is a pretty big animal and I'm sure it didn't just "dart out" from the side of the road.
