None you start from scratch and after a year if no accident, you renew your policy and it goes down a few quid
The general rule is that you necessitate at least four years no claims bonus to qualify for a protected bonus.
Some companies also insist that you are at lowest 25 and others that the protection does not apply if the driver is under 25.
There are necessarily two types - a protected bonus - means you are covered for two 'fault' claims contained by a certain spell (3 or 5 years) and a guaranteed bonus that keeps the discount irrespective of the number of claims.
Please information that neither of these guarantee that the insurance company won't but a 'claims experience loading' on which would reduce the value of the discount - but if they did I suspect a complaint about not-treating the customer justly would help.
There are one or two companies that will protect a bonus at a lower rank - see your local insurance broker for details - but these will be quite expensive.
Some insurers will insist of five years bonus (if to be exact the maximum of the scale).
Please note that the protected bonus usually entail either an increase within premium and/ or an increased excess. As a general guide it would label little difference if you had a protected bonus or not and you have ONE claim in the interval covered. You gain handsomely if you have TWO and lose if you don't hold any.
Please also note that non-fault claims would not count e.g. windscreen or 100% recovery against your 'lives'.
