I'm in Oregon. I hold a car near Montana plates. My insurance agent told me that I can't insure it until it's registered and the DMV told me I can't register it until it's insured. So which one of them is wrong?
The insurance agent is wrong, or at least he would be within my state. In fact, he's crazy. Any time you buy a sports car and drive it away, for the rest of your life, he's going to own to cover it from purchase until it's registered.
Usually vehicle insurers will insure a car if deliberately will be needed for registration.. (or at least the ones contained by my state have.. you may necessitate to talk to another insurance agent if you hold to)
Because basically the DMV requires insurance surrounded by the form of a card no matter what to do work next to the DMV... My guess is if still is insured in Montana and still titled within montana , I'd use the montana proof of insurance to change the plates and consequently get the insurance changed to oregon afterwards (my opinion)
But from what I'm reading, according to Oregon DMV website, a dispatch stating that she will cover the car I infer will be sufficent.

Answers: Your insurance agent is wrong or lazy. Find another one, even if it is for a 6-month policy. I in recent times moved to FL from CO, bought a FL policy to go into effect the light of day I got FL plates, but I have to have proof of insurance to capture it registered.
PS. It's a whole lot easier if you don't consent to your Montana insurance lapse.
