I rented a car for a friend, next to my credit card, and he returned the car later night in need paying. He told me today that he would not have the money to income for the car for a couple of weeks. What can take place to me and/or my account? What compassionate of trouble can I be in if I don't own the money to cover this?

Sounds similar to you need to dump this friend because he didn't chew over twice about screw you over on this rental. Clearly he knew he wouldn't enjoy the money and used you as a patsy.
If your card doesn't have plenty room on it for the charges, they can and most likely will bill you and if you don't discharge they will go into collections on you and ruin your credit. They can and will lug you to court eventually if you don't pay. They can and will frills your wages to pay for it.
