traditional comprehensive and collision coverage will simply cover your car up to the blue book plus. so say you took out a $15,000 loan for your saloon. if you get into a sports car accident and its a total loss, the insurance company will one and only pay what it's worth contained by the blue book, say its worth $10,000. GAP insurance covers the difference between the payoff from the insurance and the loan amount

The moment you purchase a new saloon, it depreciates in utility. As soon as you drive it off the lot, your $17K sports car suddenly becomes a $13K "used motor." Even if it only have 20 miles on the odometer. The moment it's driven off the lot, it is a "used vehicle."
Now, presume that as you're driving off the lot within your shiney new Whatchamacallit, someone smashes into it and totals it. Well, your insurance company is going to look up the good point of a "used" Whatchamacallit. There's going to be a big difference between what you paid (the ink will still be drizzly on the invoice on the passenger seat) and what the car is worth.
GAP insurance take care of that. It fill the "gap" between what you OWE and what the car is worth. So, you owe $17K on your Whatchamacallit, your regular insurance company will rate $13K (the used-car value), your Gap insurance policy will pay $4K, and consequently your balance will be remunerated in full.
Now, this is essential: If you do NOT have GAP insurance, this is what will come about: Your insurance pays $13K. You owe $17K. You will have NO CAR, and YOU will still owe $4K on the loan for the saloon that is totalled.
You definately want GAP insurance.
