3 weeks ago I hit a womans car in Sydney near my friends 4WD. I did not have any insurance on my side and now the woman's insurance desires me to pay for the damage. They give me a call saying the overexploit was AU$ 5760 but if I would pay AU$ 2900 within the next 4 weeks that would be it for me.
Now Insurance companies are not known to be humanitarian organisations so why would they tolerate me get away with smaller amount money?
I also talked to an Australian friend today who said the woman's insurance would have to impart me three quotes on how much the repair of the car would be before they start doing anythin.
Being a traveller I have a feeling like the Insurance company tries to take plus of my minimum knowledge of Insurance issues. So could someone please explain me the usual procedure for something like this?

I work in insurance claims in australia.
There is no point trying to squeeze a money out of someone if they simply don't enjoy it and then taking them to court which costs MORE money that we're not guaranteed to be paid fund by the at fault person.
So where on earth the other person is uninsured, an insurance company (in Australia) is usually happy to negotiate. contained by addition, if someone is paying off damages by instalments, it COSTS money to maintain the file open. ie, i hold to pick it up every month and either cash a cheque on it or follow up the pocket money. if i do this over a succession of years, it costs my employer time spent in wages. it's much easier, cheaper and less time consuming to negotiate a lower settlement that someone can in fact afford to pay outright or in a short extent of time.
the other woman's insurance does NOT have to get three quotes. An insurer as a rule has approved repairers where the insurer and repairer hold agreements between them on certain rates of labour and mark-ups etc. An insurance company is a BUSINESS and clearly they are not going to agree to expensive repairs, if near is no guarantee they are going to get the money back - would you settle up more than you had to if you were a business owner??
Insurer's agree on rates next to repairers which are usually LOWER than the going rate for private work. An insurer has this bargaining power as they own the ability to send plentifully of business that way.
if i were you, $2,900 sounds similar to a good deal. i'd pay envelope it.

An insurance co need only find 1 quote, THERE'S! ( they assess their own damaged vehicles.)
The owner of the vehicle you where on earth driving, didn't they have any insurance? if so, why can't you claim on that?
It just technique he will have to pay a superior excess, (which you will pay for him anyway.)
if he has full comprehensive it will cover both vehicle, third party property, only the other vehicle.
You do own the right to ask for an independent assessment, this means you will need to arrange an assessor of your choice to price the repairs. (Yellow page, insurance assessors,- vehicle. )
Or you could just pay and stir on with your holiday.
